DetailEdition no. 24 of the magazine is the work of Erdem Moralioglu, Turkish-British fashion designer and creative director, named a Member of the Order of the British Empire and director of ERDEM, the eponymous London company.
A Magazine Curated By Erdem is a chronological and intercultural tour that reveals a wide range of social and aesthetic references that characterise the designer, inspired by revolutionary figures from decisive points in our history. Throughout this edition, some of the personalities who marked a before and after in history, from Edwardian aristocrats who questioned gender roles, to child prodigies with a gift for creativity, such as Virginia Woolf, Patrick Procktor, Cindy Sherman, Marlene Dietrich and Derek Jarman, come face to face with creators of contemporary images from all over the planet. Its works include new pieces by Ethan James Green with Dara Allen, Campbell Addy with Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, William Waterworth with Amanda Harlech and Trinity Ellis with Ola-Oluwa Ebiti.
Based on his experience as a twin, Erdem reflects on questions such as duality and similarities, deciphering the concept of twin and the variability of gender through his analysis of Orlando by Virginia Woolf and the 1993 film directed by Sally Potter based on the novel, as well as the personal archives The Yellow Book (1894-97) by Aubrey Beardsley and the now-defunct homosexual magazine After Dark from the 1960s.
Erdem has thrown himself body and soul into this project. Proof of this is the series of interviews with Glen Close, Roni Horn, Tim Blanks and Sally Potter, as well as the two photo sessions led by the designer himself. The first is centred on close friends, family and muses, from Ruthie Rogers to Maria Balshaw, Gugu, Ruth Wilson, and Claire Foy, as well as Sara, his twin sister, and Wendy Dagworthy, his mentor at the Royal College of Art in London. The ballerinas and leads of the Royal Ballet are the focus of the second. Paying homage to their late mother, Sara, Erdem's sister, speaks about abstract figure painting with the well-known British artist Kaye Donachie. Then, creative director Thomas Persson and photographer Annemarieke van Drimmelen offer us a fascinating analysis of their tulip, an image for which they have used cyanotype.
Brimming with colour and life, A Magazine Curated By Erdem is a true celebration where fashion, photography, modern and contemporary painting, film d’auteur, music and pop culture are the protagonists, as seen through Erdem’s sophisticated and witty eye. -
